Just when we thought that nothing could live in Antarctica

Just when we thought that nothing could live in Antarctica -- well, maybe microbes, maybe algae, but surely no animals. Wrong!

NASA researchers have found shrimp and jellyfish living in the ocean under the Antarctic ice.

If they can live there, why not little critters on Mars?

In a surprising discovery about where higher life can thrive, scientists for the first time found a shrimp-like creature and a jellyfish frolicking beneath a massive Antarctic ice sheet.

Six hundred feet below the ice where no light shines, scientists had figured nothing much more than a few microbes could exist.

Yup, life thrives in a hostile environment.

"We were operating on the presumption that nothing's there," said NASA ice scientist Robert Bindschadler, who will be presenting the initial findings and a video at an American Geophysical Union meeting Wednesday. "It was a shrimp you'd enjoy having on your plate."

Bet those shrimp aren't glad we found 'em. But I am. Each time I read of a new discovery that makes mankind rethink what we thought we knew about the world, it excites me. This is indeed an endlessly interesting planet, one that is still full of undiscovered mysteries.
